U.S. to Store $800m in Military Gear in Israel
The U.S. Army will double the value of emergency military equipment it stockpiles on Israeli soil and Israel will be allowed to use the U.S. ordnance in the event of a military emergency, according to a report in Monday's issue of the U.S. weekly Defense News.
The report, written by Barbara Opall-Rome, the magazine's Israel correspondent, said that an agreement reached between Washington and Tel Aviv last month will bring the value of the military gear to $800 million.
This is the final phase of a process that began over a year ago to determine the type and amount of U.S. weapons and ammunition to be stored in Israel, part of an overarching American effort to stockpile weapons in areas in which its army may need to operate while allowing American allies to make use of the ordnance in emergencies.
The agreement was signed by Brig. Gen. Ofer Wolf, who heads the Israeli occupation army's technology and logistics branch, and Rear Adm. Andy Brown, the logistics director of U.S. Army European Command.
The United States began stockpiling $100 million in military equipment in Israel in 1990, 12 years after it first began storing weapons within the territory of key allies, starting with South Korea.
An American defense official told Defense News that the U.S.-Israel agreement reflects the Obama administration's continued commitment to Israel's security and the understanding that changes in U.S. economic conditions and inflation have limited the weapons available to Israel.
The deal allows Israel access to a wider spectrum of military ordnance, and the U.S. official said his government was considering which forms of military supplies would be added to stores in Israel. Missiles, armored vehicles, aerial ammunition and artillery ordnance are already stockpiled in the country.
The agreement is expected to aid Israel in its effort to bolster its weapons stockpiles for use in an emergency. Israel's stores of aerial and artillery ammunition were depleted during the Second Lebanon War in 2006, nearly reaching levels the Israeli army considers dangerously low.
So, Is Obama just another U.S President. Or maybe even worse. Or is he what we have been waiting for? Is his Islamic background going to show something? This doesnt look like it, But is this just a plan? Only time can tell. Can peace actually work, with the Arabs and the U.S.
Israel unveil details of border fence with Egypt
Israeli officials gave details yesterday of the fence they are planning to build along the Egyptian border to thwart migrants and arms smugglers.
The Defence Ministry said two fences would seal about 70 km of Israel’s 270km southern border, with one surrounding the south western border with Gaza, and another protecting the southern town of Eilat. The fences will include radar equipment that will alert the military of intruders. Radar devices and barbed wire will be placed along the rest of the border, though defence experts said the rough desert terrain was unlikely to be used by infiltrators.
“I took the decision to close Israel’s southern border to infiltrators and terrorists. This is a strategic decision to secure Israel’s Jewish and democratic character,” Binyamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister, said. The system is expected to cost about £250 million.
Israel has already built fences around the Gaza Strip, and across its eastern border with Jordan and northern border with Syria and Lebanon. Its most contentious structure has been the separation barrier that intersperses massive concrete walls with a fence encircling Palestinian territories on the West Bank.“Defence against terror activity clearly requires a fence. Good fences make good neighbours,” Israel Defence Minister Ehud Barak said. He noted that only Israel’s western border, along the Mediterranean Sea, did not need to be blocked off.
In meetings last month, defence officials reiterated concern to Mr Barak that al-Qaeda operatives in the Sinai Peninsula were passing intelligence and weapons to Gaza. Israel fears that the terror network will try to infiltrate Israel.
Egypt has also recently started building an underground barrier, aimed at stopping smugglers passing through tunnels between Gaza and Egypt. Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said that his government had no objection to Israel securing its side of the border, as long as the fence was constructed on Israeli territory.
